New Classes! Brush Lettering and Modern Calligraphy

It’s been a while, but we’re excited to finally be launching two new calligraphy classes that we hope to have as part of our ongoing line-up: Introduction to Brush Lettering, taught by Christopher Rouleau, and Introduction to Modern Calligraphy, taught by Sarah Kim. Both of these instructors may be familiar to those of you who have been with us for a while.

Christopher has been a long-time supporter of the shop, and did a chalkboard for us at the old Carlaw location. It’s been great to follow along with the incredible design work he does, both chalkboard signs and other visual materials, and also to see some of his travel adventures. Along with his graphic design, typography and illustration work, Christopher has been teaching brush lettering and lettering workshops for several years now. You can see more of his work, including things for sale, on his website and on his Instagram.

The first Introduction to Brush Lettering class takes place on Sunday, November 18th, from 1:30-4:30 pm. This class takes place at our Main Shop in Little Italy, at 52 Clinton Street.

And Sarah Kim is teaching our Introduction to Modern Calligraphy class. We’ve long been looking for a teacher for a modern calligraphy style workshop, and the stars finally aligned here.

You might also recognize Sarah from the chalkboard sign she did for us. She has been doing modern calligraphy for several years now, using various tools and materials, and in various styles. She has a background in medical illustration, but also keeps busy doing wedding and custom calligraphy. Her Instagram features a glimpse of her work and the things she is passionate about, and we’re thrilled to have her on board.

Our first Introduction to Modern Calligraphy class takes place on Tuesday, November 27th, from 6:30-9:00 pm. This class takes place at our Main Shop in Little Italy, at 52 Clinton Street.

November and December are a busy season for us, but I’m hoping to take both of these classes myself soon. I’m no lettering artist or calligrapher, but I find the practice of writing meditative, and I’m always hoping to improve my own writing and style (hah!). Sometimes a new style is what you need to help you slow down and focus.

It’s always fun to launch a new class, to bring in some new supplies, to see different people’s interests and skills, and especially to see the shop fill up with people excited about writing. Lots coming up!
